Homework Expectations

Paraparaumu School

Homework Expectations

This document has been formed after community consultation and Staff discussion in February 2011.

Daily Expectations

We will continue to insist on reading practice at home each evening as the top priority for our students. The younger students will be given specific reading books to help them ‘learn to read’ and the older students who are ‘reading to learn’ will be guided in their choice of reading material by both their teacher and their parent.

Weekly Expectations

We will provide homework which consists of:

Practice tasks (maths or spelling)

Research/interactive tasks (to do with the Inquiry Unit)

The tasks set should be able to be completed independently, however we actively encourage parental engagement (rather than surveillance).

The tasks will only take about 30-40 minutes per week to complete.

Homework will be set with at least 4 evenings to complete.

The teachers will mark the homework and comment regularly in Reading Logs.

Teachers will NOT be supervising the completion of unfinished homework at school.

Any disciplinary action taken for incomplete homework will be from home not from school.

No homework tasks will be set in the first and final week of each term.

Parents will contact the class teacher if their child is not bringing homework tasks home.
