Option 1

MSL (Multi-Sensory Structured Language Learning) is a programme designed to support students with dyslexia or dyslexic tendencies who find whole class teaching and learning of literacy to be overwhelming. The MSL approach uses visual (eyes), auditory (hearing) and kinesthetic (hands on) methods simultaneously to enhance memory and learning of written language, which then supports a students understanding of reading and spelling. This approach was pioneered by Orton-Gillingham.

The main aims of the MSL programme are for students to recognize the 26 letters of the alphabet. Understand that each of these letters represents a phoneme (sound). That these sounds can be blended to form words and segmented (chopped up) to support spelling and reading of new and unknown language. In sessions, we regularly review and build upon previous knowledge in order to create new neural pathways.

The MSL approach is very much student led and is undertaken on a one to one basis. We move as fast as we can through the highly structured programme, but as slow as is needed, constantly adapting and being flexible for each individual student.

Each new skill taught builds upon previous learning and is regularly reviewed in order to strengthen memory and build confidence with reading, writing and spelling.
